Praying Mantis comenzó en el 1977 cuando los hermanos Tino y Chris Troy,fundaron la banda y grabaron su primera demo que tuvo una gran aceptación entre la escena metálica de UK,en el 79 publicaron su primer Maxi-single llamado "The soundhouse tapes".Pudieron telonear a maiden y se convirtieron en uno de los fenómenos de la NWOBH,a parte también actuaron al festival de Reading.
El ex-batería de maiden Clive Burr,entró en la banda y con él grabaron su próximo cd en estudio,"Throwing Shapes" en 1985.En 1990 vuelven a cambiar de line-up entrando a las voces el ex-maiden Paul di anno y dennis stratton a las guitarras.Con ellos hicieron la gira que presentaba el disco en directo de la banda "Live at last" en 1990 .
De nuevo un cambio a las voces en 1993,esta vez entraba Gary Barden (MSG) para grabar con la banda "Predator in disguise"(91),"A cry or the new world"(93),"the power of ten" (95),"Captured alive in tokyo city" (96),"forever in time"(98),"Nowhere to hide"(2000) y "the journey goes on"(2003).Este último con dos cantantes:Jonhn Sloman y Dougie White.Ya en el 2004 se toman un descanso y editan este "Best of",que será las delicias de todos sus fans con material inédito de la banda.
